Job Summary

The Cardiac Device Tech is a member of our device clinic and will work closely with the Device nursing team, Electrophysiologists and Advance Practice Providers in both the outpatient and inpatient setting. This person is responsible for monitoring and review of cardiac rhythms in person as well as from remote transmissions from multiple vendors/manufacturer web-based systems. This includes downloading, interpretation of device measurements, interpretation of complex arrhythmias, analysis of data that reflects clinical scenarios, and retrieval and triage of clinical information. The information is compiled and summarized as a report for entry to the electronic medical record ensuring physician evaluation with appropriate billing. The Cardiac Device tech will also be responsible utilizing established standard operating procedures to complete perioperative and testing management of the Cardiovascular implantable electronic device (CIED).

Responsibilities*

  • Identify pacemaker capture, sensing and basic heart rhythms.
  • Evaluates and reviews remote downloads of cardiac devices. Provides a summary of preliminary findings including pacing thresholds, device therapies administered, thoracic impedance and arrhythmia burden for review and recommendation to APP.
  • Reviews operative case and determines if device is magnet appropriate based on the manufacturer?s recommendation. If not, magnet approved, consults with fellow or attending anesthesiologist to provide safe programming that the device tech will program. Supports after hours peri-operative device needs with rotational On call.
  • Post procedure the device tech will performs safety check and device re-programming based on provider orders.  
  • Performs safety checks and device re-programing to original settings with additional safety checks for patients with ICDs undergoing MRI testing
  • Performs device interrogation and programming functioning as a subject matter expert for the Advance Practice Practitioner and fellows.
  • Notifies Device RN about rhythm changes, need for device reprogramming rate changes
  • Provide transmitter/communicator teaching to patients and families as needed with a friendly and patient attitude.
  • Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships.  Approaches conflict in a constructive manner.  Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, employees, and visitors. 
  • Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, assuring personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.

Required Qualifications*

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Experience with management of Home monitoring for ICDs/ Pacemakers or equivalent certification in device management
  • Graduation from an accredited Cardiac Implanted External Device or equivalent education
  • Demonstrates clinical knowledge by taking department assessment test
  • Demonstrated knowledge of various cardiac devices
  • Experience with electronic medical record
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, along with attention to detail
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and in emergency situation
  • Excellent customer service, communication, and patient education skills

Desired Qualifications*

  • Formal training with Cardiac Devices
  • Experience with PACEART, Carelink, Latitude, Merlin, St. Jude?s and Biotronik Home Monitoring
  • 5 years' experience with CIEDs (Cardiovascular Implantable Electronic devices)
  • Ability to problem solve independently
  • Ability to prioritize tasks throughout the working day

Work Schedule

  • Hours per week:  40 hours
  • Shifts/Days, Hours: Variable
  • Location: Primary: Cardiovascular Center, Ann Arbor *flexibility required as additional locations may be added

This position is included in the bargaining unit represented by the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which represents bargaining unit members in all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
