Overview

We are seeking an Application Scientist within the research and development group focusing on the ongoing innovation efforts towards the development of new products, processes, and solutions in the bioprocessing space for both up- and downstream applications including clarification/harvest, perfusion, and UF/DF. This role will report to the “Innovation R&D Group” and will primarily be working on cutting edge technologies in early phase development and industry-driven applications. This role will require successful collaboration with interdisciplinary teams including engineering, field applications and sales to accomplish individual and company objectives. 

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop, design, and manage prototype filters, applications, and workflows for novel processes with little to no precedent or established SOPs. 
  • Provide technical support for on-going commercial manufacturing processes either in a troubleshooting or process improvement role. 
  • Perform basic to complex aseptic operations with mammalian cell culture-based applications in shake flask, fed-batch, and perfusion platforms at the bench scale. 
  • Develop protocols and reports for processes in shake flasks, stirred tank and single-use bioreactors using ATF/TFF and other perfusion systems for internal and external projects and collaborations. 
  • Analyze and trouble-shoot cell culture processes by monitoring cell growth, viability, protein productivity and other cell culture metabolites. 
  • Properly record and maintain a lab notebook with experimental procedures, protocols, and results. 
  • Prepare technical reports, summaries, and presentations for team meetings to communicate findings and progress. 
  • Work with external vendors, ordering lab materials, and coordinating service and maintenance for instruments as required. 

Qualifications

Skills:

  • Strong understanding of basic laboratory technique and etiquette. 
  • A background or high-level understanding of bioprocessing workflows is desired. 
  • Experience with shaker flask, bench scale bioreactors, perfusion-based mammalian cell-culture desired. 
  • Knowledge of aseptic technique, cell culture processes and protein analytics. 
  • Previous experience working in a laboratory setting and working with equipment such as UV-Vis, peristaltic and magnetic levitation pumping systems, metabolite analyzers, and HPLC. 
  • The ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary project teams. 
  • Strong problem-solving skills, analytical assessment, and decision making to understand and to contribute to novel solutions. 

Qualifications:

  • A minimum BS or MS in cell biology, chemical engineering, biochemistry, or related field. 
  • 0-2+ years of experience in the life sciences industry 
  • Previous experience in biotechnology manufacturing and/or process development in up- and downstream technologies desired but not required. 
  • Understanding of membrane-based filtration and TFF techniques including use of hollow-fibers and cassettes preferred. 
  • Attention to detail, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and strong organizational skills.

The estimated salary range for this role, based in the United States of America is $85,000-100,000. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to an individual's qualifications, location, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, employees are eligible to participate in one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package. We offer a wide range of benefits such as paid time off, health/dental/vision, retirement benefits and flexible spending accounts.
