Job Summary

Bus stops serve as the front door to the MBTA, the first place where many riders interact with the transit system. Bus stops are integral components of the MBTA's infrastructure, playing a critical role in facilitating safe, reliable, and accessible public transportation services. As a Junior Transportation Planner at the MBTA, your primary responsibilities will be to ensure the functionality and compliance of bus stops with established standards and regulations. By investigating and addressing bus stop-related issues and coordinating with our sign shop and maintenance teams, you will directly contribute to enhancing the overall transit experience for our community.

The Transportation Planner Analyst III supports the Operations Planning, Scheduling, and Strategy team by coordinating with municipalities across the region and internal departments including the Bus Transformation Office and Service Planning. The Bus Transformation Office is responsible for implementing Bus Network Redesign and improved bus facilities for riders and operators, and Service Planning is responsible for bus routing planning and service levels. The Transportation Planner Analyst III may collect, clean, and validate data; perform
analyses using transit scheduling software tools; present and communicate findings, data, and proposals to internal and external stakeholders; create maps and slide decks; review engineering documents and conceptual plans for bus stop infrastructure; and attend and in-field engagement events or field observations.

Duties & Responsibilities

* Investigate and assess bus stop-related issues reported by the public, municipal officials, or internal departments.
* Coordinate closely with the MBTA Transit Facilities and Maintenance to fulfill work order requests to create signs, and to initiate, monitor, and complete the replacement signage for bus stops in the field.
* Conduct field visits to evaluate existing bus stops, identify improvement opportunities, and propose necessary changes or enhancements.
* Collaborate with transportation officials, engineers, planners, municipal staff, private developers, and other relevant stakeholders to integrate bus stop planning with broader transportation infrastructure projects.
* Ensure bus stops are designed and built to meet established standards, accessibility guidelines, and safety regulations, and design directives.
* Maintain accurate records and documentation related to bus stop investigations, replacements, and construction projects.
* Monitor and respond to inquiries and complaints regarding bus stops promptly and professionally.
* Conduct spatial, statistical, or cartographic analysis using Excel, GIS, and other tools.
* Review engineering plan sets and designs submitted by consultants and other organizations that impact MBTA bus stops.
* Develop sketch or concept layouts to communicate bus stop designs, proposals, and changes to internal and external organizations.
* Prepare scheduled and ad-hoc reports, slideshows, graphics, maps, and other visual reports.
* Proactively build and maintain positive and effective
relationships with internal departments and municipal officials.
* Conduct virtual and in-person fieldwork to confirm the condition and extent of bus infrastructure, such as bus stops, busways, and signs.
* Respond to each inquiry, whether from a customer, vendor or co-worker in a courteous and
professional manner consistent with the Authority's expectations.
* Uphold the rights and interests of the Authority while building and maintaining an effective relationship with employees.
* Visit work sites and/or attend off-site meetings throughout the MBTA service area.
* Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications

* A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution in Transportation Planning, Urban Planning, Geography, Civil Engineering, Business, Public Administration, or a related field from an accredited institution.
* One (1) year of experience in transportation planning, engineering, and analytics or other related fields.
* Familiarity with public transport planning principles and application, reliability issues and metrics to measure these.
* Demonstrated ability to prepare plans to tight timescales within multi-stakeholder environments.
* Demonstrated ability to build working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, influencing key decision makers to make a joint outcome.
* Skilled problem solver with proven ability to resolve complex issues with skill, judgment, and ability to think clearly under pressure.
* Strong analytical skills, data collection, research, and interpretation of outputs to various audiences.
* Experience in at least one approach to advanced data analysis OR transportation software
(e.g.Tableau, GIS, CAD, Synchro, Vissim, or other).
* Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
* May need to pass written assessment or Microsoft Office exam.
* Ability to learn quickly, take direction, work independently, and use creative and collaborative approaches to resolve issues.
* Effective organizational, analytical, multi-tasking, and time management skills.
* Effective written and verbal communication skills.
* Have excellent customer service and conflict resolution skills.
* The ability to provide internal and external customers with a courteous and professional experience.
* Have the ability to work any and all shifts and/or locations as assigned or directed. Be available to work.
twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week.
* The ability to work effectively with a diverse workforce.

Preferred Experience and Skills
* Familiarity with modelling service changes and producing outputs of their impacts.
* Familiarity with Scheduling principles and software (e.g. HASTUS, remix).
* Formal education in planning, engineering, or related field.

Substitutions Include

* A High School Diploma or GED with an additional seven (7) years of directly related experience substitutes for the Bachelor's degree requirement.
* An Associate's degree from an accredited institution an additional three (3) years of directly related experience substitutes for the Bachelor's degree requirement.
* A Master's degree in a related subject substitute for two (2) years of general experience.
* A nationally recognized certification, or statewide/professional certification in a related field substitutes for one year of experience.

  • Ability to work all shifts and / or locations assigned, directed, or necessary for this position, including (for some transit / operations roles) up to twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week as necessary to accommodate severe weather conditions, emergencies, or any other circumstances that may potentially impact service or the safety of service
