WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW (Job Overview):

Responsible for the daily operations of the Therapeutic Apheresis Unit, which also may include, but not be limited to, collection of Human Cells, Tissues, and Cellular and Tissue-Based Products (HCT/P) and Perioperative Autologous Cell Salvage (PACS). These responsibilities may include managing daily operations and staffing, reviewing records, maintaining standards and reviewing compliance issues, managing equipment and supplies, maintaining standards and staffing for research projects, and performing or monitoring staff training and competency assessments. Maintain knowledge of therapeutic apheresis procedures; may perform therapeutic apheresis procedures and/or collection of Human Cells, Tissues, and Cellular and Tissue-Based Products (HCT/P), or PACS when needed. Ensure the Unit is run in a fiscally responsible manner. Support growth of the Unit as appropriate. Perform all duties and responsibilities in compliance with standard operating procedures, Safety Quality Identity Potency Purity (SQUIPP), regulations outlined in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and other applicable Federal, state, and local regulations.

WHERE YOUR CAREER IS A FORCE GOOD (Key Responsibilities):

  • Responsible for the daily operations of the therapeutic apheresis unit; which may include staff assignments, coordinating logistics of off-site procedures, and scheduling procedures.
  • Responsible for the supervision of staff including, but not limited to, hiring, training, coaching, evaluating, and disciplining to ensure a well-qualified team and to enhance operational success and compliance.
  • May perform therapeutic apheresis procedures, including PACS, or HCT/P collections when needed, ensuring safe and appropriate care of patient or donor.
  • Contributes to the development of and monitors implementation of local operating procedures, quality control procedures, and staff training protocols with the assigned area to assure compliance with ARCBS directives, Code of Federal Regulations, and all other regulatory requirements.
  • Assists with the daily operation for the collection of Human Cells, Tissues, and Cellular and Tissue-Based Products (HCT/P) to include scheduling and compliance with standard operating procedures, applicable industry standards such as FACT, and AABB, or manufacturer requirements. This applies to locations with an active HCT/P program.
  • Mentors new staff and ensure that new staff has access to appropriate training to reach the level of proficiency necessary to perform procedures independently. Contributes to the development and implementation of annual operating plans to ensure achievement of area therapeutic apheresis goals and organizational objectives.
  • Oversee supply inventory to ensure the effective running of operations.
  • Manages assigned staff following personnel policies to enhance the success of operations, minimize turnover and maintain cost-effectiveness.
  • On an ongoing basis, reviews/ assesses assigned areas for efficiency and effectiveness of current methods and improve productivity in support of organizational goals.
  • Discusses procedures and medical issues with patients, families, and physicians; displays effective, respectful, and acceptable behavior in public contacts and with coworkers.
  • Oversee and manage research activities/collections in the Therapeutic Apheresis Unit, if applicable.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED (Minimum Qualifications):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, Management, or related field, or equivalent combination of related education and experience required.
  • Registered Nurse, Medical Technologist, or Licensed Practical Nurse, depending on the
    requirements of state legislation, and with current state licensure, as required.
  • For RN/LPN, a minimum of one-year experience in medical/surgical or critical care nursing is a desirable or equivalent experience
  • For MT a minimum of three years of progressively responsible operations experience is required.
  • One year of supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Excellent organizational skills, the ability to handle multiple priorities
  • effectively, analyze problems and recommend appropriate solutions, and ability to assimilate information quickly.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are necessary to deal with all levels of staff, hospital personnel, physicians, patients, families, volunteers, and donors.
  • Previous apheresis or dialysis experience is highly desirable.
  • A current valid driver’s license and a good driving record are required.

The duties are representative of the essential functions of the position. Operational flexibility is required to meet sudden and unpredictable needs. Required to wear protective clothing such as lab coats, gloves, face shields, etc. when there is exposure to blood and blood products and/or where work location requires. Ability to use a wide variety of lab or medical equipment. Ability to use a personal computer and applicable software for sustained periods of time.
