GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
As the Research Associate, South & Southeast Asian Art you will provide research and administrative support for the upcoming exhibition on Hindu devotional prints circa 1860-1930 scheduled to open Jan. 2026 and continue to assist with a future exhibition on court arts of Southern India. Under the guidance of the Curator of South & Southeast Asian Art, you will assist with collection research, acquisition reports, exhibition preparations and record keeping. You will help manage periodic lecture programs and gallery training for exhibition tours.
This is a position with an established end-date or time frame. Time frames will begin upon hire: 1 Year.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
Under the Curator's direction, conduct in-depth research dossiers on objects in exhibitions under preparation and planned, including the compiling of artist's biographies, bibliographies and publication histories.
Draft object text for exhibition labels, publications, and online resources.
Support the Curator in assembling research data for future acquisitions, develop and maintain object checklists and assist with editing draft texts.
Assist with the translations of inscriptions in Sanskrit.
Coordinate with colleagues cross-departmentally in the coordination of exhibition planning, timelines and recordkeeping.
Act as a liaison with collections management to ensure up to date information in the Museum database.
Develop and update research files on works in The Met's permanent collection and update gallery labels.
Assist in sourcing comparative images and organizing object photographs for exhibition and publications.
Support in the organizing of the education programs around the collection, and liaise with the Education Department accordingly.
Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Master's degree in art history required, PhD in South Asian art history, preferred
Working knowledge and expertise across the field of South and Southeast Asian art history
Demonstrated ability in the field of history and art history research
Previous Art Museum experience preferred.
COMPENSATION RANGE:
Pay Range: $72,000.00 - $74,000.00 / Annually
