The Center for Campus Involvement (CCI) is a dynamic, student-focused department that serves all undergraduate and graduate students through programs, student organization administration, and learning and development. Through meaningful involvement, CCI creates transformative experiences, a vibrant community, and lifelong memories for University of Michigan students. CCI recognizes and supports over 1,600 student organizations through education, advising, advocacy and services. CCI also implements over 300 social, educational, and cultural programs each year, focused on building community within and beyond University Unions' facilities.

University Unions drives community building and belonging through the integration of its three student historic unions (Michigan Union, Michigan League, Pierpont Commons), Center for Campus Involvement, Campus Information, academic meeting and dining facility (Palmer Commons), and close partnership with Conferences & Event Services and Michigan Dining to provide student-focused and customer-oriented service to the campus community. Total budget volume for University Unions approximates $20 million. University Unions directly employs over 50 regular staff and 250 student staff.

Position Summary:

The Center for Campus Involvement, a department within University Unions in the Division of Student Life at the University of Michigan, seeks a motivated, student-centered, and team-oriented individual for a Program Advisor position. Reporting to the Lead Manager for Student Programs, the Program Advisor for Student Programs will advise and supervise a diverse group of student leaders in the creation, development, implementation, execution and assessment of campus events. The individual in this position develops and maintains a vibrant campus activities model and serves as an essential member of the Center for Campus Involvement team.

The Program Advisor provides direct supervision to 13-15 Student Programs employees. This will include our UUWeekly and UMix Late Night teams that are made up of our Graduate Interns (2), Programming Coordinators (6), and Program Assistants (6). The Program Advisor will serve as a member of the CCI Student Programs team, and will curate and execute training and development opportunities, advise and supervise students on program development and implementation, and provide financial oversight for budgets totaling over $300,000. It will be important that this individual will continue to grow and develop further collaborations with cross-campus partners. This Program Advisor will also work with their team to creatively continue to develop, innovate, and assess an array of co-curricular programs for University of Michigan students in University Unions facilities and across campus.

Responsibilities*

Student Development (50%)

  • Provide education, training, and support to the Student Programs student employees and leaders through the program planning process
  • Advise, supervise, train, and evaluate graduate interns and student employees who work with the Student Programs
  • Develop partnerships with other University and Student Life departments
  • Resolve problems by comparing and evaluating various courses of action, as well as understanding laws, policies, procedures, and best practices
  • Coordinate training for student staff (i.e., financial, UM policy education, event planning,etc.)
  • Provide excellent customer service to students, colleagues and non-University customers

Program Development and Implementation (30%)

  • Develop a UUWeekly programming plan to be held in the three University Unions buildings on campus
  • Develop a bi-weekly Friday night programming plan for UMix Late Night in University Unions buildings
  • Organize new and returning campus traditions, including but limited to Go Blue Mix, Gameday at the Union, Post Game Bite, and Finals Breakfast, etc.
  • Incorporate programs to contribute to larger initiatives, such as the Welcome to Michigan, alternative programming during times of the academic year identified as high-risk for students, and to help contribute to the student overall Michigan Spirit.
  • Establish goals, coordinate logistics, and provide on-site support for student programs
  • Provide on-site support for evening and weekend events throughout the academic year
  • Manage events from start to finish, including working with performers, clients, and University staff to ensure compliance
  • Act as a resource to students, the campus community, and non-University clients in all aspects of program development and implementation
  • Participate in events as needed to appropriately supervise and advise student employees coordinating co-curricular programs
  • Collaborate with University Unions, Student Life, and other University staff to coordinate logistics for programs and services
  • Mitigate risk at programs and events by taking measures to ensure safety and security of students, staff and facilities
  • Ensure marketing and social media promotions for student programs

Budget Management (10%)

  • Provide financial oversight of a student programming budget totaling over $300,000
  • Advise students in the appropriate use and allocation of those funds
  • Train students in responsible financial management and reporting
  • Manage budget tracking and payments for various co-curricular programs

Assessment (10%)

  • Use data-driven decision making to inform work, including how programs and services meets equitable needs of student populations
  • Conduct assessment of student learning as it relates to Student Life Leadership Education outcomes (MLEAD)
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • Education: Bachelor's degree
  • Experience:
    • 1-3+ years experience with co-curricular student involvement as a student or professional
    • Experience collaborating and building healthy working relationships with individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and life experiences

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master's degree in Higher Education, College Student Affairs or related field
  • An understanding of and commitment to the college union philosophy

    Financial/Budgetary Responsibility:

    • This position requires you to provide financial oversight for multiple budgets totaling over $300,000. It will be imperative for this individual to be organized and proficient in Excel and or Google Sheets to account for all transactions for each program.

    Working Conditions:

    The position requires flexible work hours and an individual that can work frequent evenings and weekends. After the completion of 90 days, we offer a Hybrid work schedule with 3 days in the office, and 2 days remote. The successful candidate must be able to work in a collaborative environment, but also work independently and make good decisions that reflect University and Student Life policies, procedures, and philosophies.

    Physical Requirements:

    • It will be important that the individual can help assist in setting up and executing multiple programs a week.

    Direct Reports:

    • This position supervises two graduate interns and approximately 13 undergraduate student employees.

    This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.

    Authorization to work in the U.S. is a precondition of employment and applicants for this position will not be sponsored for work visas.

    Salary may vary depending on qualifications, experience, and education of the selected candidate.

    Relocation will not be offered for this position.
