Location:
This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with onsite requirements on Monday, Tuesday and Thurday and may be assigned to any Consumers Energy Service Center located throughout Michigan's lower peninsula. The candidate must be located within commutable distance of the locations OR willing to relocate (relocation package available to those who qualify).
We are looking for: Principal LVD Design Electrical Engineer (Contract Design Management)
The Principal LVD Design Electric Engineer is a departmental subject matter expert of electrical engineer. This role is responsible for engineering and design of large complex project for the sustainable operation of our distribution, generation, and storage system. This role collaborates with a team of engineers and technicians and coordinates across the organization and external stakeholders, on large complex technical projects within their subject matter of expertise. They are specialist in electrical utility systems and products design, layout, implementations.
The Principal LVDD Electrical Engineer serves as a subject matter expert for the department. In LVD Design - Support & Contracted Design, the role would be responsible for project engineering and design, including design review and approval, mentorship and training of both internal and contract resources, leading waste elimination efforts and problem-solving projects, pursuing new technology and tools; and oversight of large complex projects for Consumers Energy's LVD system. The role collaborates with engineers & technicians within LVDD and cross functionally across the organization on large complex projects. They are a specialist in LVDD systems, products, standards, design, tools, layout, processes, and software. This position will be required to hold a storm role which will require on-call for emergency response.
The knowledge and skills involved with this position include but are not limited to:
- Knowledge of applicable codes related to electronic engineering
- Proficient in design and calculation software
- Written and verbal communication skills
- Organizational skills and attention to detail
- Analytical and problem-solving skills
- Knowledge of the theory and practice of electric utility distribution planning, construction, operation, and maintenance
- Working knowledge of electric utility operation (i.e., generation, transmission, and distribution of three phase alternating current power)
- Knowledge of distribution planning principles is an asset

In this role, you will be responsible for:
- Inspect and review designs of others within the department (contractors) to verify compliance with standards and processes
- Ensuring compliance with specifications, codes, and customer requirements through directing or coordinating documentation, support, and engineering processes
- Prepare specifications and requirements associated with department deliverables
- Ownership of department process documentation in the Standard Work App
- Indirectly supervise engineers and technicians, overseeing their work (internal and contract)
- Act as a liaison between the engineering team and upper management, providing reporting and well as regular updates on project status
- Initiate and lead department and cross functional waste elimination and problem solving
- Complete Go and Sees in the field with designers
- Act as contact point for contract engineering firms
- Lead regular touchpoint meetings
- Follows up on action items with contract engineering firms to deliver on KPIs.
- Design, control, and implement electrical systems and products and serve as the primary point of contact with clients for all electrical engineering project matters
- Manage the development and implementation of electrical systems
- Designing, maintaining, implementing, or improving electrical instruments, facilities, components, equipment products, or systems for industrial, commercial, or domestic purposes
- Prepare contract documents, including specifications, drawings, and addenda
- Performing a wide range of engineering tasks by operating computer-assisted design or engineering software and equipment
- Collaborate with customers, coworkers, and others to discuss existing or potential engineering products or projects and monitor project progress and budget, and prepare reports for upper management
- Ensuring that installation and operations conform to standards and customer requirements by preparing electrical systems specifications, technical drawings, or topographical maps and investigate and resolve project issues in a timely manner
- Establishing construction, manufacturing, or installation standards or specifications by performing a wide range of detailed calculations
- Ensuring compliance with specifications, codes, or customer requirements by directing or coordinating installation, manufacturing, construction, maintenance, documentation, support, or testing activities
- Writing reports and compiling data regarding existing and potential electrical engineering projects and studies and provide technical support to other departments and personnel as needed
- Preparing specifications for purchases of electrical equipment and materials and estimating material, labor, or construction costs for budget preparation
- Oversee and manage the installation of electrical equipment and components
- Other non-essential duties as assigned or may be necessary
