SUMMARY
This position is only for current Northeastern University Students who have been accepted into the Co-OP program for January 2025.
Under direct supervision, assists clinicians with routine clinical procedures and tests in the exam room. Advises patients of preparation and testing required for exams. Ensures all pre-visit work required for exam is completed and that lab and other test results are available in the electronic medical record (EMR). Delivers excellent customer service and strengthens the patient/clinician relationship through timely and informative interactions with the patients. Improves clinical operations and efficiencies by providing efficient flow of patients. Provides clinical and clerical support to the practice and clinicians related to patient care. May provide direct clinical support to one or more assigned clinicians.
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Provides efficient flow of patients to optimize patient appointment availability.
- Greets and escorts patients to exam rooms. Measures vital signs, such as blood pressure, pulse rate, weight, and height.
- Assists clinicians with routine clinical procedures and/or additional tests specific to the department. Advises patients of preparation or pre-visit testing required for exams specific to the department.
- Ensures patients’ electronic medical record (EMR) is updated with medical information, including recent testing and consultations.
- Keeps patients informed of visit status, unforeseen delays and other relevant information.
- Follows meaningful use guidelines to verify and update patient medical information in the electronic medical record, including confirming demographic information, medications, allergies and chief medical complaints, and ensuring the EMR patient data is accurate and up-to-date. Reconciles medications and sets up pending refills. Discontinues prescriptions that are no longer active.
- Actively involved in MyHealth enrollment by encouraging and assisting patients to sign up to MyHealth Online.
- Assists in resolving minor patients concerns and complaints as appropriate.
- Orders and performs point of care testing on patients; classified as waived testing (e.g., strep, urine, hcg and glucose testing). Has knowledge of reagent stability and storage. Understands the testing procedure and factors influencing test results. Follows quality control procedures. May performs Proficiency Testing and preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration of the device. Provides valid patient test results with QC before reporting. Follows procedure in reporting test values as well as documenting the test values in the electronic medical record.
- Under clinical direction, places orders for appropriate lab and imaging tests.
- Prepares, cleans and maintains exam rooms, equipment and supplies.
- Answers backline calls and consults with other departments on internal problem resolution.
- Assists patients with scheduling referrals, follow-up appointments and pre-visit labs.
- Assists with orienting new staff. Provides back-up coverage for other support staff.
- Participates in care improvement activities as expected, such as Rapid Improvement Events (RIEs), Value Stream Analyses (VSAs), and Managing of Daily Improvements (MDIs).
- May sort and manage clinician mail (may be paper or electronic). Maintains and screens MyHealth messages. Addresses incoming questions when appropriate.
- May generate correspondence typically of a clinical nature such as letters regarding medical necessity for Medicare, or outreach on lab work, or utility letters.
- May order supplies for the department and maintain the stock room.
- May function as a Medical Secretary I as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
High School diploma or equivalency certificate (e.g. GED, HiSET, TASC Test) from an accredited institution or governmental unit or a Medical Assistant Certification required American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) strongly preferred. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) may be required based on specialty. Student in an undergraduate program required.
EXPERIENCE
Computer experience required with the ability to use word processing and spreadsheet programs.
SKILLS
Able to communicate in a professional and appropriate manner. Strong interpersonal, customer service, time management, and organizational skills required. Ability to be a quick thinker and relate to all levels of staff and patients highly important. Ability to prioritize work throughout the day in a busy environment.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Able to use all electronic tools and applications relevant to the performance of the duties of the position, including but not limited to phone, keyboard, computer and computer applications.
Performs all job functions in compliance with applicable federal, state, local and company policies and procedures.

Actively protects the confidentiality and privacy of all protected health information they access in all its forms (written, verbal, and electronic, etc.) taking reasonable precautions to prohibit unauthorized access. WORKING CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Busy office environment with frequent deadlines and interruptions. Frequently moves among the exam rooms. Moves and transports supplies and equipment and escorts patients.
