We are accepting applications to fill one (1) full time Equipment Mechanic vacancy in the Resource Recovery & Waste Management Division (RRWMD) of the Public Works Department in Santa Barbara. Under general supervision, maintains and repairs a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered equipment; performs related duties as required. Currently there is one position in Public Works, for an appointment due to an employee leave of absence. This recruitment is to fill a position vacated because of a leave of absence (CSR 1414) and the duration of the appointment shall be subject to the return of the individual who is on a leave. A person who is appointed to a position under CSR 1414 may be able to transition into a regular position in the classification without reapplication or re-testing, depending on the performance of the appointee and the needs of the department.
The established employment list for this recruitment may also be used for future Full-Time, Part-Time, Extra-Help, and CSR 1414* vacancies in the Public Works Department and General Services Department. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Equipment Mechanic I/II is a flexibly staffed series. Equipment Mechanic I is the entry-level class in which incumbents perform the less complex repair work and assist an Equipment Mechanic II in performing the more complex repairs. The Equipment Mechanic II is characterized by responsibility for independently performing more complex repairs and for acting in a lead capacity over an Equipment Mechanic I. This series is distinguished from the Automotive Mechanic class series by responsibility for maintaining and repairing heavy equipment. Heavy equipment is defined as vehicles larger than one ton, including: fire engines, buses, and construction equipment.

ABOUT THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT: The Santa Barbara County Public Works Department consists of five divisions: Transportation, Resource Recovery and Waste Management, Water Resources (Flood Control, Water Agency and Project Clean Water), the County Surveyors Office, and Administration. Examples of Duties
- Maintains motor vehicles and heavy equipment in proper working order by: tuning motors; checking points, plugs, condensers, distributors, brakes, steering gear, and condition of engine block; installing new brake shoes; bleeding and adjusting brakes; balancing and aligning wheels; and performing preventive maintenance, such as changing oil, lubricating equipment, and maintaining fluid levels.
- Diagnoses less complex problems and performs such work as overhauling hydraulic systems and repairing electrical systems; performs body work and painting; welds together broken components; responds to emergency calls and makes necessary field repairs; maintains tools and repair equipment in clean, working condition; keeps records of work.
- Assists Equipment Mechanic II in: rebuilding engines; repairing transmissions, differentials, starters, and fuel pumps; disassembling motors of autos, trucks, and heavy equipment such as tractors, loaders, graders, rollers, back hoes, pavers, high lifts, and paint stripers.
Employment Standards
- One year of experience performing preventive maintenance and routine repairs on motor vehicles or heavy equipment; OR
- A combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to one of the employment standards listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
Additional Qualifications: Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License upon appointment. Possession of a valid California Class A Driver's License within one year of appointment.
Note - A California Class A Commercial Driver's license must be kept valid and maintained as a condition of continued employment.
Once an incumbent has obtained the Class A license, they will be subject to mandatory testing for drugs prior to being assigned work requiring such a license; once assigned, incumbents will be subject to mandatory testing for drugs and/or alcohol on a random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up basis.
Knowledge of: principles and practices of repair and preventive maintenance of motor vehicles; tools and equipment used in making mechanical repairs.
Ability to: learn electronic diagnostic methods and equipment; learn to use an automated recordkeeping system; follow instructions; follow safe work practices; learn gas and arc welding; keep simple records; use a computer keyboard.Supplemental Information
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Incumbents in this class perform most work outdoors, may be required to work in awkward positions, and may be exposed to hazards such as diesel exhaust.
SELECTION PROCESS:- Review applications and supplemental questionnaire to determine those applicants who meet the employment standards.
- Supplemental Questionnaire Ranking. Responses to the required supplemental questionnaire will be evaluated and scored. Candidates' final score and rank on the eligibility list will be determined by their responses to the supplemental questionnaire. This process may be eliminated if there are fewer than 11 qualified applicants. Do not enter "see resume" or "see application" when responding to supplemental questions as raters will not have access to any information except what you enter in the box for each required supplemental question. Although you may have some of this information on your application, you will need to answer the questions completely for this section.
Conditional Job Offer: Once a conditional offer of employment has been made, candidate will be required to successfully complete a background check, which includes a conviction history check, and satisfactory reference checks. Appointee will be subject to a post-offer medical evaluation or examination.
