Deputy Chief Financial Officer
Overall Function
The Deputy CFO, in consultation with EDF’s audit and finance committees, the Chief Finance & Technology Officer (CFO), and other senior managers, is responsible for developing, implementing, and ensuring global compliance with sound and prudent financial policies and practices that are consistent with regulatory requirements and the goals of the Environmental Defense Fund. The Deputy CFO is responsible for general accounting, regulatory compliance, financial planning and analysis, and financial reporting. They will also be responsible for payroll and other financial operations. This position reports to the Chief Finance & Technology Officer.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting and Compliance
- Oversee all financial accounting and compliance activities, including:
- General accounting of EDF and its subsidiaries, maintaining an efficient and effective internal control environment over the accounting.
- Compliance with EDF accounting policies and procedures.
- Completion and review of month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closes.
- Maintenance of EDF’s general ledger and other accounting records, including the chart of accounts, fund structure, and all sub-ledgers.
- Interpretation and application of US GAAP, IFRS, and any other applicable accounting standards.
- Processing of accounts payable, employee expenses, and employee reimbursements.
- Review and approval of payroll processing, including calculation, management, and authorization of 403(b) and 457(b) transfers.
- Scheduling, coordination, and support of all external audits.
- Preparation of tax returns and other financial filings for all EDF entities.
- Support the CFO in written and oral presentations to EDF’s audit committees on regulatory compliance and internal controls matters.
Planning and Analysis
- Oversee all financial planning and analysis activities, including:
- Development, implementation, and communication of EDF’s annual budget.
- Monitoring spending against budget, reporting on budget variances risks.
- Responding to staff requests and queries related to the budget.
- Preparation of long-term financial projections, including cash flow forecasts.
- Preparation of monthly budget update reports for senior management and quarterly financial reports for EDF’s finance committees.
- Support the CFO in written and oral presentations to EDF’s finance committees on budgets, financial results, financial plans, and risks.
Treasury
- Oversee all treasury activities, including:
- Management of EDF’s banking relationships and overall control over cash transactions.
- Development and implementation of banking policies and procedures.
- Engagement with investment advisors and consultants.
- Compliance with investment policies and guidelines.
- Administration of EDF’s credit card program.
Team Management
- Manage and lead team with eye toward developing staff.
- Develop and communicate staff roles and responsibilities.
- Oversee delegations of authority within the team.
- Ensure all team members keep abreast of current accounting developments.
- Ensure EDF management is kept informed of important changes in accounting, tax, and other relevant regulations.

Qualifications/Requirements
- 15+ years of related work experience managing accounting and financial operations; non-profit experience required.
- CPA or MBA required
- Comprehensive knowledge of financial accounting standards and procedures.
- An unquestioned track record demonstrating sound judgment, integrity, and ethics.
- Ability to gain and maintain the trust of others.
- Ability to problem solve and work independently, handling and prioritizing multiple time- sensitive projects with a firm commitment to meeting deadlines.

- Participates in professional accounting societies and maintains current knowledge of GAAP, FASB, and other relevant accounting standards.
