Full Job Description

Alkermes is seeking a talented individual for a Material Characterization co-op in our Formulation Development Department in Waltham, MA. As a co-op, the selected candidate will support the ongoing work on characterizing the mechanical properties of granular pharmaceutical materials that are paramount to the success of solid dosage forms manufacturing.  Specifically, the project focuses on quantifying the flow and compression of pharmaceutical powders. The candidate should have in-depth knowledge of solid mechanics and the current state-of-the-art in this field.  The program offers the candidate hands-on experience in various solid-state characterization techniques and the opportunity to gain a fundamental understanding of key aspects of pharmaceutical development processes. Additionally, there will be opportunities to learn and apply statistical analysis and design of experiments.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Bio-Medical Engineering, or a related discipline. 
  • Minimum GPA 3.2
  • A background in solid mechanics is good to have

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience with granular material processes
  • Proficiency in MATLAB/Python/JMP
  • Proficiency with electronic notebook
  • Experience working in a pharmaceutical R&D setting
  • A background in solid mechanics is good to have
  • Experience with good laboratory practices
  • Highly motivated and detail-oriented
  • Ability to apply scientific principles to design, execute, and interpret experiments
  • Team player with good interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication

Working Conditions: This is a lab-based job position, and the candidate is expected to work full-time in a lab setting.

Physical Requirements: The candidate should be able to work in the lab for at least four hours a day, which may involve lifting up to ten pounds.
