Description
Boilermakers perform inspections, fabricate, assemble, modify and perform maintenance and repairs on locomotives in full compliance with FRA and Union Pacific requirements. Must be able to locate and isolate mechanical problems, identify possible corrective actions and select appropriate action.
Accountabilities
- Fabricate, assemble and modify locomotive structures, parts, heavy sheet metal components and parts using welding, cutting, riveting, bolting, soldering and grinding.
- Work with shop machines, tools, vehicles and equipment (including,but not limited to, drill and punch presses, drills, impact wrenches, power saws, grinders, acetylene and plasma torches, electric and gas welding equipment).
- Safely and effectively operate the following: acetylene torches, plasma torches, non-power tools (pliers, wrenches, etc); power tools (drills, power saws, grinders); electric and gas welding equipment
- Weld all types of metals including iron, steel, stainless steel and aluminum.
- Demonstrate proficiency in welding techniques. including gas, brazing, SMAW, MIG and TIG, in various welding positions.
- Remove and install welded and/or threaded stay bolts, studs, plugs, etc.
- Operate overhead hoists and jacks to lift parts.
- Read, understand and interpret information, including blueprints and CAD/CAM.
- Layout fit and verify measurements for sheet metal work of 13 gauge or heavier metal.
- Accurately transcribe numbers and English words onto forms.
- Take appropriate action when conditions threaten safety or self or coworkers; ensure equipment and work area are in safe operating condition before starting work.
- Understand and follow company and industry safety rules, practices and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
- Communicate with others, verbally and in writing, technical information, job procedure recommendations and other work-related information.
- Operate in a team environment, cooperating and maintaining positive working relationships.
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors and/or customers and effectively handle conflict situations.

Qualifications - Required
- All applicants must have reached the age of 18 or above.
- Basic keyboarding skills
- Experience making quick and accurate visual inspections at near and far distances
- Valid driver's license
- Able to effectively work independently and in group settings
- Experience in and able to demonstrate proficiency in welding pressure vessels up to 3" wall thickness; welding all types of metals including iron, steel and stainless steel. Experience and be able to demonstrate proficiency in welding techniques including gas,brazing, SMAW, MIG and TIG, in various welding positions.
- Removing and installing welded and/or threaded stay bolts, studs, plugs, etc.
- Experience in fabricating steel and aluminum parts.
Qualifications - Preferred
- Previous experience reading and understanding blueprints and computer-aided design (CAD)/computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) systems.
- Previous experience safely using heavy fabrication tools/equipment (ie. brake press, sheer, band saw, etc).
Physical and Mental Job Requirements
- Move safely over uneven terrain or in confined spaces.
- Required to have normal color vision, enabling the detection and interpretation of various visual color signals and displays, and able to determine the speed of moving objects at both close and distant ranges.
- Required to react quickly to sounds.
- Comfortable wearing personal protective gear for most of the day.
- Climb and maintain balance on ladders, stairs, or equipment as needed regularly.
- Frequently perform physically demanding tasks, including occasional bending, stooping, and kneeling.
- Lift, carry, or otherwise move weights up to 25 pounds regularly.
- Detect unusual sounds and smells during inspections and testing.
- Work at heights of 12 feet or higher
Work Conditions
- All candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring company sponsorship.
- Must be available to work 40 hour work weeks that may include variable shifts with overtime and work on rest days, holidays and weekends
- Must be willing and able to work around large equipment such as railcars, locomotives and cranes
- Willingness to work outside regardless of weather conditions
- Ability to read and understand job information written in English
