Full Job Description

The Department of Economics invites applications for a tenure-track position in Health Economics to Address Health Disparities. This position aims to advance innovative research to address health disparities by applying computational methodologies in the analysis of large-scale health data systems and by evaluating the impact of healthcare and other policies on these disparities. The applicant will be expected to contribute to the Department's commitment toward pluralism in economics. The applicant will also contribute to campus-wide strategic initiatives such as 1U4U, which fosters multi-disciplinary, cross-campus collaborations in innovative, high-impact research, the Responsible AI Initiative-a $100 million initiative to advance the use of ethical AI applications to help solve long-standing societal challenges and inequities, and the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, which offers expertise and innovative methodologies, tools, and resources to assist research teams at every stage of the research life cycle and across the translational spectrum. The faculty member will help develop and apply disparities-centered methodologies in economic evaluation.

Strong preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate ability to successfully work collaboratively across different disciplines and engage with diverse communities to understand and incorporate their health needs and perspectives in economic evaluations. Applicants with experience in seeking extramural funding and applications of artificial intelligence methodologies such as machine learning, natural language processing, and deep learning will be favorably reviewed.

Candidates should expect to contribute to the Department of Economics graduate and undergraduate programs such as designing and teaching courses to prepare students for innovative scholarship in health disparities.

The appointment will begin on July 1, 2025, subject to final budgetary approval. A completed Ph.D. is required by the time of appointment. More information about the Department can be found at http://www.economics.utah.edu.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Economics, Health Economics, or a closely related field.
  • Scholarship in the area of health disparities research.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across different disciplines and lead cross-disciplinary teams.
  • Strong commitment to educational excellence and innovation.
  • Evidence of engaging with diverse communities to understand and incorporate their health needs and perspectives.
