Position Summary: Located on the central campus of the University of Michigan, the William L. Clements Library houses original resources for the study of American history and culture from the fifteenth to the early twentieth century. The Assistant Director of Developmentis responsible for the Clements Library Associates membership program, coordinates the Library's annual fund efforts, and implements the Library's events and lectures. Working closely with the Director of Development, the Assistant Director provides stewardship and a frontline presence to donors of the Clements Library. This is a 3-year term-limited position in support of the Centennial of the Clements Library and Campaign planning.
Responsibilities*
ANNUAL GIVING (25%)
- Write, design, and implement solicitation packages produced internally in the fall and spring for donor (Clements Library Associates) renewal in coordination with the DevCom team
- Serve as the liaison to the OUD Annual Giving Office participating in the campus-wide direct mail and phonathon programs as appropriate. Communicate deadlines and results to the DevCom team
- Develop a comprehensive strategy for a quarterly new membership acquisition appeal
- Increase response rate and retention for Associates using DART reporting and analytics
- Track and analyze giving metrics to refine program to ensure increased revenue
- Produce weekly acknowledgement letters, packets, emails, or handwritten notes to donors in collaborations with the DevCom team
PROSPECT MANAGEMENT (50%)
- Responsible for qualifying new annual giving donors through phone calls and visits. Provide exemplary stewardship of their first gift and determine their capacity and interest in future giving.
- Maintain a portfolio of Leadership Annual Gift prospects capable of gifts from $1,000-$25,000 or more. Ask for increased annual gifts through phone calls and visits. Work with Senior Director of Development, Associate Director of Development, OUD Planned Giving Liaison, and OUD Regional Gift Officers to solicit major and planned gifts as donors indicate interest. Build donors? relationship with the Clements Library and the University of Michigan.
- Record and manage plans in DART and document interactions. Maintain good records in in the team's shared OneNote file. Work strategically with the team to determine next steps for the donor.
- Work with OUD Prospect research to request research information and reports.
- Have a comprehensive understanding of the Clements Library priorities and make a persuasive verbal and written case for supporting key programs and projects, effectively matching the interests of prospects to specific Clements needs.
EVENTS AND OUTREACH: (15%)
- Staff several on-campus events per month such as on lectures, brown bag talks, pop-up exhibits, and special events as well as virtual events such as the Clements Bookworm
- Organize one to two regional events per year in collaboration with regional gift officers, SCU partners, Alumni Association, and/or donor volunteers.
- Lead introductory and educational tours for special visitors and groups
- Participate in meetings of the volunteer Development and Communications Committee
OTHER (10%)
- Participate in Clements and campus meetings
- Through collegial consultation and cooperation, demonstrate and be a model of collaboration in the development community, while representing Clements Library values and its unique role at the University of Michigan.

Desired Qualifications*
- A baccalaureate degree
- 1-3 years of fundraising or alumni relations experience and/or relevant experience in other related fields dealing with a sophisticated audience, handling sensitive information, and executing plans to accomplish a pre-defined goal.
- Comfort with personal computers and software programs for retrieving, organizing and researching appropriate donor/prospect information, as well as data gathering and manipulation.
- An ability and willingness to quickly learn the Clements Library's and University's history, mission, demographics, faculty, current programs , etc., as well as the culture to be able to persuasively articulate how the Clements Library distinguishes itself from peer institutions.
- Strong interpersonal skills, both written and oral, as well as a high level of sophistication and maturity in social and professional settings.
